The shop
A black room, gold chairs and no appointment you have to beg for.
Black Flag sits on Raymond Street in the middle of Sale. Black walls, timber floor, a pair of gold barber chairs and a pirate painted across the front window. It is not a chain and it does not pretend to be.
Every barber in the shop is independent and rents their own chair. That is why the price moves depending on who you book with, and it is also why nobody here is watching a clock that belongs to somebody else.
Bart has been behind the chair for over ten years and still puts himself through education sessions in Melbourne. The photos below are from those days as much as from the shop.

Barbering does not improve by accident. Half the photos on this page were taken at education days rather than in the shop: practice heads clamped to a bench, a room full of barbers, someone better than you watching your hands.
One of those walls has “keep up the great work, I love your passion and dedication to the craft” written across it in marker. That is roughly the point of the whole exercise.
